MFA Financial is an internally managed real estate investment trust (REIT) that specializes in investing in and financing residential mortgage assets. Its core holdings include residential whole loans — such as non-qualified mortgage (Non-QM) loans, legacy reperforming and non-performing loans (RPL/NPL), and business purpose loans (BPLs) — as well as residential mortgage-backed securities (Agency and Non-Agency MBS) and credit risk transfer (CRT) securities. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Lima One Capital, acquired in July 2021, MFA also originates and services business purpose loans directly to real estate investors on a nationwide basis.
